Which Plastics Manufacturing Process Pays the Most?

If you’re building a career in plastics manufacturing — or trying to fill roles across different process types — you’ve probably noticed that “plastics” covers a wide range of work, and the pay across that range varies significantly. An injection molding process engineer at a medical device contract manufacturer and a thermoforming operator at a packaging plant are both in plastics. They’re doing fundamentally different work, serving different industries, and earning very different incomes.

So which process actually pays the most? The honest answer is: it depends — but the patterns are clear enough to give you real guidance, whether you’re a candidate choosing where to specialize or an employer benchmarking compensation for a role you’re trying to fill.

The Five Major Processes (and Where They Sit on Pay)

1. Injection Molding — The Highest Ceiling, Especially in Automotive and Medical

Injection molding is the dominant plastics process in the U.S. by employment volume — and when it’s tied to the right end market, it’s also the highest-paying one.

At the operator level, injection molding machine operators typically earn between $18 and $26 per hour. Move into a process technician role — someone who sets up molds, adjusts processing parameters, and troubleshoots shot-to-shot variation — and you’re looking at $52,000 to $85,000 annually, with senior technicians at automotive and medical facilities consistently hitting the upper end.

Process engineers in injection molding average $89,430 per year nationally, with most earning between $80,500 and $104,500. At Tier 1 automotive suppliers and medical device manufacturers, $110,000 to $130,000+ for a senior process engineer with robust tooling and validation experience is not uncommon.

The key variable is the end market. Automotive injection molding pays premiums for IATF 16949 experience and statistical process control proficiency. Medical injection molding pays premiums for ISO 13485 knowledge, Class II and III device experience, and cleanroom protocol familiarity. Both markets demand documentation discipline that packaging and consumer goods injection molding typically don’t require — and that discipline commands a salary premium of roughly 15–25% compared to commodity injection molding work.

2. Extrusion — Strong Pay, Especially in Specialty and Wire/Cable

Extrusion is a broad category: film and sheet, pipe and profile, wire and cable jacketing, medical tubing, compounding. The pay range reflects that breadth.

Extruder operators in commodity film and packaging applications earn $17 to $24 per hour. Extrusion process technicians — managing line setups, die changes, and resin-specific parameter adjustments — typically earn $52,000 to $78,000, with specialty applications pushing that range toward $85,000 for senior technicians.

Extrusion process engineers average $92,018 nationally — which actually edges out injection molding on the engineer-level average, largely because specialty extrusion applications for wire/cable, automotive lines, and medical tubing require deep materials science knowledge that is genuinely scarce. If you’re looking at extrusion, the materials you’re extruding matter more than the process itself. Medical tubing and wire/cable pay significantly more than polyethylene film.

3. Blow Molding — Solid Mid-Range, With a Ceiling Below Injection and Extrusion

Blow molding — extrusion blow, injection blow, and stretch blow molding — sits in the solid middle of plastics pay ranges. Operators typically earn $17 to $23 per hour. Process technicians in blow molding earn $45,000 to $72,000, and process engineers typically fall in the $72,000 to $95,000 range.

Blow molding is heavily concentrated in packaging, and commodity packaging doesn’t drive the same compensation premiums as automotive or medical. That said, automotive blow molding — fuel tanks, air ducts, fluid reservoirs — pays at the high end of the range because it carries automotive quality requirements similar to injection molding at that tier.

4. Thermoforming — Lower Floor, Moderate Ceiling

Thermoforming is the most operator-accessible of the major processes — setups are less complex than injection or extrusion, and that accessibility reflects in the pay. Machine operators typically earn $15 to $22 per hour, and process technicians in thermoforming generally earn $42,000 to $65,000.

At the engineer level, thermoforming salaries span $50,000 to $110,000, but the upper end belongs to medical and aerospace applications where material qualification, traceability, and validation requirements are demanding. Commodity packaging thermoforming engineers are typically closer to $65,000 to $80,000. For candidates in thermoforming looking to maximize pay without switching processes, moving toward medical or aerospace applications is the highest-leverage move available.

5. Specialty Compounding — The Highest Technical Premiums

Compounding doesn’t always make the list when people compare plastics processes, but it deserves a place here because it consistently pays at or above automotive injection molding for technical roles.

Compounders and compound development engineers — the professionals who formulate polymer blends, masterbatches, and specialty materials — sit at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and manufacturing process. That combination is rare. Senior compounders and compound development engineers earn $80,000 to $130,000+, and the pool of candidates who genuinely understand polymer interactions, filler loading, and processing window development is smaller than employers typically expect when they open a search.

The Bigger Factor: End Market Beats Process Every Time

Here’s the most important thing to understand about plastics pay: which end market your process serves matters more than which process you work in.

An injection molding operator at a commodity consumer goods facility earns less than an extrusion technician at a medical tubing manufacturer. A thermoforming process engineer in aerospace earns more than a blow molding process engineer in packaging. The hierarchy, roughly, is:

Medical & aerospace > Automotive > Industrial/specialty > Consumer goods > Commodity packaging

This plays out consistently at every level — operator, technician, engineer, and management — and it’s driven by the regulatory requirements, quality standards, and documentation burden that higher-stakes end markets impose. IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 13485 for medical, AS9100 for aerospace — these certifications require process discipline that takes years to develop, and that discipline is compensated accordingly.

What Drives the Biggest Pay Premiums Across All Processes

Regardless of which process you work in, the following factors move compensation most significantly:

Validation and qualification experience. Anyone who has run IQ/OQ/PQ protocols for a new mold, line, or process in a regulated environment — and can document it — earns a premium in every plastics process.

Statistical process control proficiency. SPC isn’t universal in plastics. Facilities that run it need people who understand it and can act on it. Those people earn more.

Cross-process knowledge. A process engineer who understands both injection molding and tooling design, or both extrusion and compounding, commands a broader range of opportunities and higher compensation than a single-process specialist at comparable experience levels.

Shift flexibility and tenured experience. Plastics manufacturing runs 24/7. Senior technicians and engineers who have worked across shifts, managed process transitions without supervision, and mentored junior operators represent operational reliability that employers pay to retain.

Which Process Should You Specialize In?

If maximizing total compensation over a 20-year career is the goal, medical injection molding and specialty extrusion (wire/cable, medical tubing) offer the clearest path. Automotive injection molding is close behind and offers more geographic distribution of opportunity. Specialty compounding is an underrated path for candidates with a chemistry or materials science background who want a high technical ceiling without the production-floor intensity of injection or extrusion.

If you’re already in thermoforming or blow molding and looking to increase your pay within your current process, the fastest path is moving toward a higher-stakes end market — not switching processes. The skills transfer; the context and requirements are where the premium lives.

Plastics wages rose 4.4% in 2025 with another 6–9% projected for 2026, driven by a retirement wave removing experienced workers and an estimated 49,000 unfilled positions across the sector. For candidates with real process experience — in any of the processes above — the leverage is better right now than it has been in a long time. For employers, waiting for the right candidate to appear on a job board is a strategy that’s becoming harder to defend.
